    Oil filter nightmare

Just in case anybody was wondering, the oil filter on the 825i coming from the factory is still heck to get off. I just did my first oil change and needed several different kinds of channel locks to get it done.

For those who don't know; It's easier to remove the filter with the JD filter wrench. I think mine cost about $5.00 at the local dealer.

Yes it is...and it's worth the few bucks.

That's what happen when you don't lube the seal. Same bull on all our new Cat equipment (every two years). The first service is a royal pain.

I use a JD strap type filter wrench like I use on the full size tractors. It makes the removal job much easier.

Dixidog, welcome to club, we all have been in your shoes. I think it's part of John Deeres theft control. Put the darn filter on with an impact wrench and no one will pocket them! LOL. I have now changed my oil 6 or 7 times and it's a breeze seeing I lubricate the seal and install using just hand power. Taking the filter off for the first time may just cause you to cuss like a sailor.

Yep....I always thought Ford trucks were bad about that first oil filter but they are easy compared to the JD one. In hindsight I'm thinking the first thing I should have done when I brought my Gator home is remove the filter, lube the seal and put it back on.

Yes, it's tough to get at. No room to maneuver a giant size pair of channel locks or even a pair barely big enough to grab the filter.

I used a three prong universal wrench that has a 3/8" drive connection. It takes two hands, one on the three prongs to get them in place while applying torque to the ratchet with the other hand. A bit of a hassle, but it worked. I expect subsequent changes will be easily doable by simply twisting off the filter by hand since the factory gorilla didn't put it on.
