Got a smoky diesel in my 6 by 4 even after I had the injectors checked. Thought it might be a mis timed injection pump, but its gear driven. No way to change time. Rings are new and not stuck to aluminum pistons, has not been overheated. Motor starts and runs all day, just smokes a bit. Called the dealer, spoke to a "mechanic" they said injection pump and 1000.00 for repair....Right! Other than starting with a simple compression test, not sure which way to go. Any ideas?

depending on the color of smoke will depend on the problem according to the tech manual. If its running good but excessive smoke it could be that the timing between the pump and intake/exhaust valves are not in time with each other. Other than that theres about 5 other things the manual says but varies between symptoms.

Smoke is blue, rings have seated a bit more and not as noticable. Have checked the timing and is all gear driven. Haven't touched the pump adjustments.
