View Full Version : 825i oil capacity is a joke!

I was reading through my book and was shocked to see the oil capacity is only 1.37 quarts! WTF! I would expect a 3 cylinder car engine would hold more than that! 8 hrs for break in oil change then every 100 hrs after? Too long to go with such little capacity in my mind. It takes the same filter as the 620i too. When should I switch to synthetic and what brand should I use?

it will take 2 qaurts to change the oil and get it back to the full mark!! owners manual I think was printed by gremlins. I agree a motor that turns rpm like that should have double capacity and an oil cooler.

Is it exactly 2? Do you run synthetic? No oil cooler?

2 qts. is what it took to bring it up to the full mark. no cooler I put in deere oil as recommended.

My 855d took 2.2 qts to bring to the full mark (with a filter change). The manual also stated 1.37 qts, so clearly there's an error. I have a 1991 JD 332 with a 3-cylinder Yanmar diesel that holds 3 qts - it has over 2000 hours on the engine. I have used the Deere oil the entire time with no problems, changing the oil every 100 hours.

I use the new John Deere synthetic 0-W40 oil with CJ-4 rating, it's perfect for all temps. 2.2qts. is the correct oil level, my 332 garden tractor takes 3 qts. as well, it's basically the same engine as the Gator but the oil pan is deeper.

I just bought the service manual for my 825i and it states approx 2.3 qt for an oil/filter change. The manual is very detailed and worth having.

Just turned 9hours on my 825i. When I went to change the oil and filter I found the filter on the gator was a different size as the new filter as in I needed a different filter wrench. Anybody else have this problem. And by the way this engine is built in China.

yep have a half dozen filter wrenches and not one works for it. channel lock is what i used. the china engine is what it is . I wish you could get an american gm motor instead. dont get me started.

I found it difficult to remove a few filters on some equipment I run untill I found this wrench at NAPA. It has removed all filters in all kinds of hard to reach spots. It self adjusts to the filter size and uses standard 3/8 drive tools. The harder you turn the harder it grabs.

Man I disagree! My new Gator has 8 hours on it so I had to change the oil and filter today. So I went down to the local NAPA and dropped $12 on this POS! It might work on other filters but just would not grab this filter at all! I ended up doing the screwdriver deal on it. Thank God there was room!

It comes in different sizes, are you sure you got the correct size? It might be worth taking a filter to the store to make sure you get the correct size wrench.

I stopped by the Local JD Dealer tonight and got a sweet Filter Cup that fits the Filter for $5.99. If NAPA takes it back I will get my $12 back and be $6 ahead.

I did my 8hr break-in oil change today on the 825i. The filter was so tight, it seemed to be welded on. I ended up with a few different filter wrenches from the local autozone. The gadget above ultimately worked, but it took some coaxing to get it to grip the first time. I can see why jonny had trouble - I had given up on that one but was making no progress with any other approach. Then I decided to give it one more try and it finally gripped like a vice. I noticed the factory filter was slightly different dimensions than the replacement I got from the dealer. My first thought was that they gave me the wrong size. Regarding the capacity, I too was going by the op manual that stated 1.37L. I was up to almost 2 quarts and still not showing full on the stick. Then I checked the tech manual - 2.3 quarts. That was more like it. I finished the 2nd quart and added about 1/3 more then I was good to go. Now I know for next time.

JD should really change that in the owners manuals.

I'm going to go to Mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic I think. I'm still going to change the hell out of it though. Probably every 20 hours. Can't be too careful!

To increase your oil capacity and make it much easier to change the oil filter, I added a filter relocation kit that consisted of a Derale 15709 and a 15705. The oil filter along with the 6ft of oil line gave me an extra quart of capacity and a small amount of cooling.

Nice, I like that! Could you post the part # and and where I can get one?

Thanks,

Dave

who made or where did you get that mounting bracker? It is a little more complex with a poly cab.

The bracket was salvaged from a building renovation. It came out of a large air handler and was used to mount heavy duty pneumatic damper actuators. Sorry for the late reply. I haven't logged on to the forum in a while.

Hi my book says 2.2L or 2.3 qts .We use this machine for weed spraying on steep hill country in New Zealand .Have only done about 70 hrs since mid August but goes real well so far .As for the engine being made in China so are the brake disks half the stuff in the world is made in China.Had a look behind the back of your smart phone latey or your flat screen TV .have just ordered a electric power steer kit for it .Will see how that goes.

So, is the consensus that it will take 2.3 quarts to bring the dipstick to the full mark after an oil and filter change?

Hours are mounting fast and I will be doing my 8 hour oil change in a week or two at the most.

MBDiagMan, yes its 2.3 quarts to bring the oil level to the full mark on the dip stick. Got my gator the first week in 2012 and the owners manual says 2.3 quarts.

There was a thread on here awhile back about a guy on ebay selling a downloadable version of the service manual for the 825i for i think around 12 bucks. Do a search and see about contacting that guy its well worth the money to have a service manual at your finger tips.

Has anyone else done this oil filter relocation kit? Its a tempting modification, but I'd like to hear some others inputs on it first.

Yep. Made by Chery International. A Chinese mini car and engine builder.
